Yesterday I attended the launch of A Leap of Sympathy at East Gallery, Norwich.

The exhibition presents the work of Anna Perach, featuring a live performance of two large-scale feminine sculptures: one brought to life by a live performer, while the other operates as a clockwork automaton.

It was a mesmerising performance accompanied by a highly visceral soundscape that really stayed with me.

Perach’s work challenges traditional ideas of softness and femininity, pushing back against the ways patriarchal systems have tried to control and define women’s bodies and identities.

This exhibition title draws from philosopher Henri Bergson. Bergson suggests that, since we cannot empirically prove another person’s internal experience, we must take a ‘leap of sympathy’ a leap of trust to relate to them.

The exhibition runs until Saturday 13th December 2025 at East Gallery, St Andrews St, Norwich, NR2 4AE. Free admission.
